undiscovered talent
my family and i went to little tokyo for ramen around 7pm and afterwards made our traditional yogurt run but there was something not so ordinary about this night. on our way back to the car, we were stopped by a tall, african-american man with a deep, husky voice by the name of kenny towler holding a blue folder. he described that he was a street poet, offering to recite his poems on the street for a little bit of cash for a meal. delighted, we quickly asked to hear one of his poems, a street poem. his poem was about his life as a young boy in his unsafe neighborhood in mississippi. as he was reciting his poem, you can immediately tell the passion and raw talent that this man possessed; his words were lyrical, almost like music, his hands moved to the beat as he shared a bit of his own heart with three completely random strangers on the street. he described that he had some of his work published in a local anthology from winning poetry contests and such and hoped to one day study journalism at a university. walking back to our car, my family and i were so impressed at the talent this man had and it made me realize there is so much talent out there that goes undiscovered because of one's social standing. it was apparent that this man was either without a home or unstable in terms of financial standing but his dreams and hopes for his career were so respectable. there are so many people out there with so much to offer this world, yet they can't simply because of money and i see something incredibly wrong with that picture. however, i do believe that those people with incredible things to offer will get their chance one day because talent like that does not deserve to go unnoticed.
